Eastern Prickly Pear Cactus, scientifically known as Opuntia humifusa or Opuntia vulgaris, is a hardy and resilient species of cactus native to parts of the eastern United States and Canada. This cactus is distinctive for its paddle-shaped fleshy pads that are covered in clusters of small barbs and larger, more formidable spines. During the late spring and early summer, it produces vibrant yellow flowers that are strikingly beautiful against the green of the pads. These flowers are followed by reddish, edible fruits commonly known as "tunas." The Eastern Prickly Pear is particularly notable for its ability to survive in colder climates, unlike most other cacti, making it a popular choice for outdoor gardens in temperate regions.
